Elementor Not Loading When Editing Page

  • 2
  • 2

I’m having trouble with Elementor not loading when I try to edit a page on one of my WordPress sites. The strange thing is that Elementor works fine on other sites hosted on the same server, so it seems to be an issue isolated to this particular site. I haven’t changed any server settings, and other plugins/themes appear to be the same version across all sites.

Has anyone experienced this kind of problem before? What steps should I take to figure out why Elementor isn’t loading on just this site? Are there specific error logs or settings I should check, or common conflicts I might have missed? Any advice or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Leanda, let me try to answer this as concisely as possible:

Common Causes for Elementor Not Loading:

    • Plugin Conflicts – This is a big one! Other plugins, especially caching/minification plugins or those that mess with the WordPress Heartbeat API, can interfere with Elementor’s JavaScript.
    • Theme Conflicts: Your theme might have custom scripts or bundled page builders that clash with Elementor.
    • Server Environment Issues:
      • Outdated PHP Version: Elementor needs PHP 7.4 or higher.
      • Low PHP Memory Limit: Elementor can be memory-intensive. If your PHP memory limit is too low (e.g., 32M), it won’t load.
      • Server Buffer Limits: Large pages can send a lot of data (JSON payload), and restrictive server settings can cut it off.
    • Security & Network Factors:
      • Web Application Firewalls (WAFs): Firewalls (like ModSecurity or security plugins) can block Elementor’s AJAX calls.
      • Cloudflare Rocket Loader: This feature can defer Elementor’s critical JavaScript, causing loading issues.
      • X-Frame-Options: Elementor loads the page preview in an iframe. If your server or a plugin sends an X-Frame-Options: DENY header, the iframe won’t load.
    • Browser & Client-Side Issues:
      • Browser Add-ons: Ad blockers, script blockers, or privacy extensions can block Elementor’s resources.
      • JavaScript Console Errors: Errors in your browser’s developer console can prevent loading.
      • Outdated Browser/Hardware: An old browser or a computer with low memory can cause slowdowns or stalls.
    • Elementor Bugs: Rarely, it could be a bug in a recent Elementor update itself.

    Quick Fixes:

    • Clear your browser cache.
    • Update Elementor and Elementor Pro to their latest versions.
    • Address Conflicts:
      • Use Elementor Safe Mode: Go to Elementor → Tools → Safe Mode and enable it. If Elementor loads, you have a plugin or theme conflict.
        • Plugin Conflict: If Safe Mode works, deactivate all plugins except Elementor and Elementor Pro. Then, reactivate them one by one, testing Elementor after each, until you find the culprit. Remember to clear your site’s cache after each change.
        • Theme Conflict: If Safe Mode works, switch to a default WordPress theme (like Twenty Twenty-Four) or Hello Elementor. If it loads, your theme is the issue. Contact your theme developer or look for conflicting features.
      • Optimize Server Environment:
        • Update PHP Version: Check your PHP version in Tools → Site Health → Info → Server. If it’s below 7.4, update it via your hosting control panel or by contacting your host.
        • Increase PHP Memory Limit: Edit your wp-config.php file (or .htaccess/php.ini) to increase WP_MEMORY_LIMIT to at least 128M, preferably 256M or 512M.
        • Enable “Switch Editor Loader Method”: Go to Elementor → Settings → Advanced and enable this option. It helps with server buffer limits.
      • Manage External Services & Security:
        • Check WAFs/Security Plugins: Temporarily disable security plugins or check their logs for blocked requests. You might need to whitelist Elementor’s URLs.
        • Disable Cloudflare Rocket Loader: Turn this off in your Cloudflare dashboard (Optimization → Speed). Also, purge your Cloudflare cache.
        • Fix X-Frame-Options: Ensure your server or security settings allow X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN and remove any DENY settings.
      • Browser & Client-Side Diagnostics:
        • Try Incognito Mode/Different Browser: This helps rule out browser add-on conflicts. If it works, disable your extensions one by one.
        • Check Browser Console for Errors: Open your browser’s developer tools (usually F12) and look at the “Console” tab for red error messages. These can give specific clues.
        • Update Browser/Free Up Resources: Make sure your browser is updated and close unnecessary tabs/applications.

    Last Resort:

    • Roll Back Elementor: If nothing else works, and especially if the issue started after an update, consider rolling back to a previous stable version using Elementor → Tools → Version Control. Always back up your site first!
    • Remember to clear your site’s cache and your browser cache after making any significant changes to ensure they take effect!

Hope this helps you get back to editing!

The easiest way is to consult your hosting provider. This happened to me before and they helped me fix it. But it depends on your hosting provider of course. Goodluck!
